The Letter J visits P & T

We had a great Parent & Toddler session this week with Jude and Jon from The Letter J. There was lots of singing, storytelling, and drawing going on. The most popular song in the office was definitely the Fruit Salad song. We’ll be singing it for a while to come!

Late last year, Andrea gave a tour to a group of students from St Bride’s Primary. They explored the many natural habitats of the Gardens; enjoyed the smells of the herb border and listened to the sounds of the birds that make The Hidden Gardens their home.

One of their favourite activities, surprisingly, was handling some of the woodlice found in the woodpiles. Our administrator is glad she was not present for this activity.

The students wrote Andrea thank you letters, which brightened her day! We love when people love the Gardens.

Dwarf Iris denies winter

Oh, how about we ignore that the weather is meant to get colder and pretend that spring has already arrived? That’s what this wee dwarf iris has done!

Multicultural Celebrations

It was a busy night last night as Amanda and Andrea represented the Gardens at two events. Amanda was at BEMIS Multicultural Homecoming 2014 Celebration Dinner. Amanda writes “A big thank you to BEMIS for a very enjoyable evening celebrating Multicultural Homecoming on St Andrews Day. Thanks to all the musicians and performers, especially the Scottish traditional musicians, the Hong Loc Lion dancers and Indepen-dance performers, and Glasgow Dholis drummers.

I learned a new recipe too – Edinburgh Fog, very tasty!”

Andrea represented the Gardens at the National Sikh Banquet Celebration Event. The Gardens have worked closely with the neighbouring Gurdwara, most recently in the Gurdwara Gardening project. It was a fantastic night highlighting the works of the Glasgow Gurdwara since it opened last year.

Andrea says “It was a great evening, and really successful fundraising event for the Glasgow Gurdwara. There was a great variety of food, and it was fun to chat about which foods we liked best. I loved seeing the Guru Granth Sahib choir again after their wonderful performance at our Mandela Celebration in July.”

It looks like both events were a lot of fun. Now back to work, ladies!

Updates from the Allotment

We’ve been having a lot of late autumn sunshine down at the Hidden Garden’s community plot at the New Victoria Gardens, bringing lots of the summer flowers back out on show, like these lovely Cosmos. We were delighted to host Interfaith Glasgow‘s first in a series of Southside Interfaith meals last night, part of National Inter Faith Week celebrations. The Hidden Gardens Men’s Cultural Cookery group kindly volunteered their time to cater for the event, cooking a delicious vegetarian feast including: mint tea (harvested from the Gardens); pea and potato pakora served with coconut chutney; spinach and chickpea curry with raita and couscous with roast cherry tomatoes, and finally Moroccan rice pudding with fruit salad. The good food was accompanied by good conversation, and guests shared their thoughts of the evening on coloured leaves. These leaves will be collected after every meal and shared on a tree following the culmination of the meals later in 2015.

Interfaith Glasgow shared this message on their Facebook page:

Last night the Hidden Gardens hosted the first in our series of interfaith community meals. The aim of these meals is to bring together people from different religious communities in the South East of Glasgow to share good food and good conversation in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Last night’s guests included members of the Muslim (Sunni and Shia), Baha’i, Christian, Buddhist, and Sikh traditions. Delicious food was prepared by the Hidden Gardens’ cooking group and presented in an ambient setting conducive to dialogue on the theme of faith and nature. One guest wrote: “It is a fantastic event, I enjoyed the discussion at my table. … [F]aith should bring people together rather than separate them”. Our thanks go to The South East Integration Network (for funding this community meals project), the Hidden Gardens, and all the attendees for making last night so special.

I wanted to share some pictures of Iceland (although they don’t really do it justice!!). It’s really worth a visit! In the short period of time we spent there, we saw the most diverse landscape. It is literally living and breathing.

Thingvellir National Park Iceland crop

We had just experienced a close family bereavement and found this wild and unpredictable landscape of Iceland very emotive. It reminded me that the endpoint is not nearly as important as the journey itself, and if one thing in life is constant, for us and for the land, it’s the inescapable notion of change and renewal.

In Reykjavik airport, this poem is inscribed on the wall:

‘on earth’s part
all days start beautifully
patiently it revolves and revolves
with its trees
and oceans and lakes
deserts and volcanoes
the two of us and the rest of you
and all the animals’

It has always been a desire for me to be able to get behind the controls of a camera, capture the action and edit it into a real-life film.

When I heard about this opportunity I snapped it up straightaway. Located right beside my local Gurdwara and during my university holidays, it was ideal.

I thoroughly enjoy the experience of capturing the natural beauty of the Hidden Gardens and learn how they evoke the values of equality, humanity and destiny through the plants and flowers

I’m really looking forward to Friday when we will put all our learning together and be given the responsibility to capture the beauty and form of the dancers during their performance.
