Updates from the Jeely Playzone Community Garden

Since July last year, we have been delivering gardening skills training to Help Yourself Grow, a Fair Deal initiative that supports young people with a learning disability to learn new skills such as gardening or cooking. Each week the groups meet at The Jeely Playzone Community Garden in Castlemilk and The Hidden Gardens deliver weekly seasonal gardening sessions.

Participants have been learning how to maintain a garden, compost, propagate, cultivate, grow flowers and vegetables too. Additional activities have included looking after nature, making bird feeders and bird identification.

‘I enjoyed sowing radish seeds and harvesting them. I enjoy watering because it is an important job. I liked smelling the different plants and learning about them’ (Brandon, participant)

All participants are currently working towards The CALEY Grow and Learn Award ‘Roots’. Not only are they learning new gardening skills, participants are also setting personal goals too.

Currently the groups are designing a sensory garden for the site which will be built over the coming months. We hope to use it as a training garden as well as it being beneficial to the local community and the young people at The Jeely Playzone.
